Happy Learning Young People’s History of the United States course is a fall boutique history course for students over 9 years old, to satisfy students and parents who are interested in a fun and relevant history course. The teacher will tell the stories of children throughout the eras in US history. We always hear about history from the adult’s point of view. Weren’t there kids in history? What did they like? What toys did they have? What was school like? What did they do for fun? Were they afraid during the conflicts the US entered? Through the course, students will learn about kids at their own age living throughout US history. The different eras we will be investigating are: Civil/Minority Lives, Childcare, Labor Laws, Rights, Education, Child Protection (Foster Care, Orphans, etc)

讲师:Diane Popenhagen女士教授的学生包括从三年级到高中和大学。她目前在丹佛大学任教。
Instructor: Ms. Diane Popenhagen has taught from 3rd grade all the way to the high school and university levels.  She is currently teaching at Denver University.

Class 2: How the US treated children, Rights of Children Amendment

Class 3: Minority Children

Class 4: Child Labor Laws, A look at other countries. What about poor families? What if the 

Class 5: Childcare, Big city vs. small town, Mother’s status, Daycares, the invention of Preschool, kindergarten.

Class 6: Child Protection

Class 7: Education, Compulsory education, Standards set, Play as a right, Equal?

Class 8: Education, cont’d, Boarding schools ,Differences for genders

 

HW

Look up the amendments. Choose one to discuss with the class. Write a few paragraphs to remind you of the points you want to make.

Create a picture, using supplies at home of a day in the life of one of the children groups we learned about this week.

If you had to choose one of the ways children were “protected” after the parents died, which one would it be. Write a story about your day in that life.
