In Reading & Writing, students will learn to develop and strengthen their writing through planning, revising, editing, and rewriting. Readings in this course will emphasize analysis of character and theme, authorial craft and style, and the elements of strong writing. The goal of class discussions and guided reading questions will be the development of students’ critical thinking skills through their active engagements with each week’s texts. Class discussions and activities will be focused on teaching students close reading skills and fostering students’ independent thinking. The course is primarily designed to strengthen students in academic reading and writing. Each class will involve reading and writing assignments. Students will be taught narrative, argumentative, and informative composition skills. Students will learn to consider the logical organization of their writing, how to choose relevant textual evidence in their literary analysis, and how to support claims in an argumentative essay with clear reasoning and sufficient evidence. Grammar and writing mechanics will be topics of specific instruction. The goal of this course is to strengthen students’ reading and writing skills in order to prepare them for challenging English Language Arts courses at the high school level.
Unit 1: Weeks 1-5: Exploring narrative texts and writing about literature
Students will use a variety of reading strategies to help them learn to read critically and formulate their own literary analysis. Readings in this unit will focus on short stories and poetry. Students will be asked to write, edit, and revise their own work as part of their writing process. Students will peer edit and engage in class discussions about writing mechanics and author’s craft in the texts they read and in their own writing. This unit will also include specific lessons on writing mechanics and organizational strategies.
Unit 2: Weeks 6-10: Argumentative writing
In this unit, students will focus on how to read and write arguments. Texts will be primarily nonfiction, and readings will include exemplar texts and mini-lessons on the elements of strong arguments. Students will work together in groups to peer-edit their own arguments. The unit will include a full-length argumentative essay as a final writing assignment (students will be given class time time to draft, revise, and edit their essays).
Unit 3: Weeks 11-15: Informative and creative writing
The final unit in this course will help students learn to write for a variety of audiences. Students will practice informative writing and be given the chance to write their own fiction. In this unit, students will focus on fine-tuning their own writing. Students will receive mini-lessons on how to use grammar, usage, and mechanics effectively as writing tools.
